Sustainability and Decarbonisation in Villa Bluu

Sustainability and Decarbonisation in Villa Bluu

From the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Change in Tourism to the Net Zero Roadmap for Travel and Tourism, the Hotel Industry is taking on the decarbonisation challenge and so too are we at Villa Bluu.

Zanzibar’s infrastructure is quite limited and therefore this makes sustainability a must on the island. ZECO, Zanzibar Electricity Corporation, is a state run utility company which supplies electricity to the whole island. Since 1980 Zanzibar has been connected to the main Tanzanian Grid system by a submarine cable of 132KW.

As you can imagine this is expensive and not a sustainable system. For this reason, we are going solar. In order to however maintain the AC’s, we do still need to be attached to the grid system as well as having a generator when solar and ZECO are not available.

Our water is supplied by an underground well which maintains the villa. All our food comes from within 20km of the villa as well as our fish and seafood. We do also have a garden where we have started to grow our own fruit, vegetables and herbs.

At Villa Bluu we do not use single use plastic and all our shampoo, body lotions and conditioners as well as spices, tea and coffee are sourced locally and organic. Is it enough? Maybe not, but we are certainly trying our best and will continue to try and find sustainable solutions.
